One player picking up another. . . one game at a time

September 17, 2017–After watching @LWE_Griffins knock off the number one team and steamroll two conference opponents, it would be easy for fans—and a photographer—to start looking ahead.  The offense is putting points on the board, and the defense seems to live by the mantra ‘three and out,’ but those who have started on this journey before know the folly of farsightedness.  Footballs bounce in funny ways, a missed call can end a drive, and some nights the wind and rain seem to beat both teams.  No, a championship in 8A football isn’t won in a month, and an experienced coach knows September and October are the time for players to learn the importance of focus, effort, and commitment.

While players and coaches work on technique and strategy, fans and photographers can contemplate a line from Ursula LeGuin’s Left Hand of Darkness: “It is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end.”
